Poetess 03:41
Poetess by Colleen Taylor McCubbin I used to doubt the theory that the love of a good woman could set a man free But when you understood who I was I knew then the same had happened to me Though you are leaving I'm still believing in who you saw in me I am a poetess and one day I will take my place among the grandmothers and wise women. I am a poetess; between the silences I hear stories and find the words to speak. I thought you would stay here and listen as I discovered my voice I hope you're watching when I am standing, declaring my choice to take my calling, now I am following after resisting for so long I am a poetess and one day I will take my place among the grandmothers and wise women. I am a poetess; between the silences I hear stories and find the words to speak. Bridge: How can I tell you what it means? You drew my heart out and encouraged me to say ... I am a poetess and one day I will take my place among the grandmothers and wise women. I am a poetess; between the silences I hear stories and find the words to speak.

Prairie Soul 03:13
Prairie Soul by Colleen Taylor McCubbin I’ve been away from the prairie for a long time now, But it never leaves my soul I feel the rhythm of the grain blowing in the wind When I watch those big waves roll I love the sea for it’s broad never-endingness Waves rolling wild and free Away from the city I dream of the prairie Expanses are calling to me Feed my prairie soul Make my senses overflow Take me to the fields Run with the wind Sky take me in How I look forward to wide open spaces And driving for hours on end Loved ones awaiting me, pouring me coffee And silence, a beckoning friend Feed my prairie soul Make my senses overflow Take me to the fields Run with the wind Sky take me in If I never stand on another mountain If I never live in a crowded town If I only look from a distance I won’t frown, sit me down and … Feed my prairie soul Make my senses overflow Take me to the fields Run with the wind Sky take me in

Urgent Bells 03:23
Urgent bells begging me back to where I've been Places and needs I long to fill To be where hearts are yearning To be part of what God's doing I want to throw myself into it all But I turn and go away What can I say? I can't stay I've got to walk with Jesus So don't hold too tightly Don't melt my heart this way Aching with eyes that go right through me Please don't divide my love 'Cause if I have to choose There's only one thing left to do I turn and go away What can I say? I can't stay I've got to walk with Jesus Maybe there will come a settling time A time to stay somewhere And put down roots Maybe someday What can I say? I can't stay I've got to walk with Jesus Got to walk with Jesus Following Jesus Got to walk with Jesus

Go From Me 02:27
8.
Speak softly, Love, quiet my heart. I'd gone astray, now set me apart. Tell me the way that you love me again Let me allow you to clear away the sin. You are so faithful, I want to be faithful, too You are so lovely, make me like you.

By the bridge, they were married While the sun tried to shine In her dress she foreshadowed its rays ...

about

In 2001, I thought I was moving to China, so I went into the studio to record this collection of songs to leave behind with friends and family.

I didn't move. I stayed right there on the prairie in Saskatchewan. "Maybe there will come a settling time," I muse in the song Urgent Bells. I did settle on the prairie (re-settle, really) in many ways.

One of my students told me that when I had started teaching at Briercrest I "had the scent of the Orient" on me, but after I thought was leaving and ended up staying, that scent no longer lingered. I still would go to China or Cambodia in a heartbeat if given the chance, but it no longer has that same sense of urgency.

Now I am more settled than ever, married and living in Calgary. It's still a struggle not to keep looking for something new around the corner. The new opportunities are less dramatic than getting on a plane to another country and more ordinary--like planning dinner and making a home. It's a good place to be. And the foothills of Alberta provide plenty of wide-open spaces for this prairie soul.
