about

In 1997, a friend gave me a book of poetry by 19th century British women, with this quotation on the back:

"England has many learned women ... and yet where are the poetesses? ... I look everywhere for Grandmothers and see none." (Elizabeth Barrett Browning)

He included a card in which he called me a poetess. It was a powerful gift -- not the book, but the gift of being SEEN, called forth into one's true vocation. Thank you, Scott.

lyrics

Poetess
by Colleen Taylor McCubbin

I used to doubt the theory
that the love of a good woman
could set a man free
But when you understood who I was
I knew then the same had happened to me
Though you are leaving
I'm still believing in who you saw in me

I am a poetess
and one day I will take my place
among the grandmothers and wise women.
I am a poetess;
between the silences
I hear stories and find the words to speak.

I thought you would stay here
and listen as I discovered my voice
I hope you're watching
when I am standing, declaring my choice
to take my calling, now I am following
after resisting for so long

I am a poetess
and one day I will take my place
among the grandmothers and wise women.
I am a poetess;
between the silences
I hear stories and find the words to speak.

Bridge:
How can I tell you what it means?
You drew my heart out and encouraged me to say ...

I am a poetess
and one day I will take my place
among the grandmothers and wise women.
I am a poetess;
between the silences
I hear stories and find the words to speak.
